With United States automakers desperate to make a sell, they have been implanting an arsenal of incentives to get shoppers to lots to purchase their vehicles. Along with their 0% loan deals to get the part started companies such as Ford are also using enticing rebates to gain sales. While this super low financing and Ford Rebate deals did help move cars off the lots, it also hurt their profit margins big time. GM reported that their profits had been weakened after the prices on their cars dropped by 3.2%. Even while Ford was caught up in rebate deals it was a surprise in April when their prices had actually risen by a small .2% in the quarter. So how did they pull all of this off? Well one sneaky move made by the automaker was a $90 price increase on their Ford Taurus model. They also spent much of their resources to promote cars with high profit margins that weren't selling out without help, this includes the big F-150 pickup truck, and they made sure to promote options on their vehicles which were very profitable. This new smart pricing is part of a big plan to give this automaker a big turn around attempt, although in 2001 this smart pricing helped the company lose $6.4 billion over 2 years. But after those 2 years the plan started to show its true bright and beautiful colors as in 2002 their prices held steady while those at GM fell by a full 2%. Now the plan has also helped them pull in on average $1,400 more than GM pulls in per vehicle.

Ford uses sales data daily from its dealership network to make sure that it doesn't waste any money with its incentive programs. The information helps to show marketers which cars need to improve their sales in each particular regional market, and which cars are selling well on their own. For example, Ford offered a $1,000 rebate on their Escape model but when it came to the Explorer which was selling much slower they offered a much larger $3,000 incentive. This helps Ford spend about $300 less on incentives per vehicle then its big rival automaker General Motors.

Ford also uses sales data to launch special edition models for cars whose buyers are more likely to spend money on lucrative options. By pushing these options Ford is able to make a huge increase in its profit margin. They bank off of customers who are willing to pay for more luxury options.

GM's rebate deals are definitely squeezing Ford but its advanced smart pricing system is working well to keep them in the game. Competition from other foreign automakers are more able to rely on their much stronger car lineups instead of having to throw out large incentive deals which hurt their bottom line. American automakers really need to work on their image and quality of vehicles if they want to stay in the industry for the long term. The new emerging eco friendly auto market provides them with the chance to remake themselves but they are already falling behind the Japanese automakers in this area. Honestly, I hope another automaker such as Toyota buys them out and is able to restore these companies to their former glory. I know, I definitely hate the idea of a Japanese company owning one of our great American automakers but it may be the best way. Today's American automaker just doesn't seem to get how to play the game well enough anymore.

2009 Audi RS6

The time for Audi to shine in its section of the automotive industry has finally come. The RS6 is back, but this time it's as a sedan version and it's got the competition worried. The 2008 Avant version wasn't exactly what most enthusiasts were looking forward to but with such an immense amount of horsepower and torque, this RS6 is seeking the title as king of sedans like never before.

What lies beneath the hood is an FSI direct injection, dry-sump lubricated, twin-turbocharged V10. All of this adds up to 580 HP @ 6,250 RPM and 479 lb-ft of torque @ 1,500 RPM. This Audi, like others, is electronically limited at 155 MPH. Unlike others though, it has an option to raise the electronic limit to 173 MPH. Before it even reaches those type of speeds though, it completes the first part, also known as the 0-60 in 4.5 seconds.

With the amount of power this car has, it's going to need a superior handling system along with some top-quality brakes. This is where the new ''Audi Ceramic'' system comes in. The sizes of these new brakes which use eight pistons all around are 420mm for the front and 356mm for the rear disks. These carbon brakes are painted in anthracite and weigh 12.2 kilos all together, 26.90 lb less than the regular steel disks. The new RS6 has a couple of distinctive features that when seen, immediately identify it as a top-of-the-line model. These include the single frame grill, air intakes, headlights with xenon plus, adaptive light and Audi RS6 specific LED lights. Other features that improve this car's aesthetics are the flared fenders, deep side skirts, rear diffuser along with the spoiler which is integrated into the trunk lid and the two large oval exhaust pipes.

With all the features and the performance this car has, you're probably wondering how much it costs. You're right if you thought expensive, as this Audi starts with a price tag of €105,550

In a world where the luxury saloon market has been subject to a great deal of saturation, it can be difficult to identify the top performing models from mere pretenders to the crown. For ever BMW M series saloon representing quality and performance, you have a Chrysler Sebring representing the rather less positive characteristics of the style. I have always found that the key to finding a great saloon car is to look back over its history to see how it has evolved and where its genesis began.

A great example of a luxury saloon with all the correct credentials in place is definitely the Maserati Quattroporte. Translated simply from the Italian as "four doors", the Quattroporte does exactly what it promises. If you are currently looking for a luxury saloon car and are finding the task of narrowing your choice down from hundreds to just one, then there is a rather important bit of information I have that may be of interest to you. Today's most popular prestige saloon brand is obviously BMW, who sell thousands of units in the United Kingdom alone on an annual basis. However, if you knew of a way of trading up to a more prestigious brand whilst spending the same amount of money, most people would jump at the chance.

If you are looking to spend £50,000 on a luxury saloon, you are likely to be looking at the BMW 7 Series, which in its own right is a fantastic range of saloon cars. However, for the same money you would be able to get hold of a Maserati Quattroporte that was perhaps only a year old and had very low mileage.

The reason this is possible is that prestige cars from manufacturers like Maserati depreciate massively in value as soon as they are driven away from the dealerships forecourt for the first time. The value dips dramatically as dealers struggle to sell the cars on in the future. Obviously there is some stigma about used cars regardless of age or low mileage, which is why most people would rather drive away a new BMW 7 Series than a year old Maserati, but if I was offered the choice between the two, I would snatch the keys to the Used Maserati every single time.

Is the 3,000-Mile Oil Change Necessary Or is it Just Marketing?

How often should you change the oil in your car?

If you automatically guess 3,000 miles you could be wrong.

When I was 16 and bought my first cool car, my dad taught me to change the oil every 3,000 miles, no matter what! He taught me that because my Grandfather taught him.

But is it really necessary?

I think that the "3,000 Mile Oil Change" theory made sense years ago, but with most recent cars, 5,000 miles is probably plenty. However, there are a few vehicles that may go as high as 12,000 miles between oil changes.

Many new cars have a technology where the car actually tells the driver when to change the oil.

Cars that currently have this variable/indicator light are GM, Honda and Chrysler.

And, recently I read about a company that is developing an oil-purifying technology that will push the oil-change interval to 30,000 miles! If their product comes to fruition, imagine the impact that this would have on the oil-change industry!

Believe it or not, Shell Lubricants, which owns the Quaker State and Pennzoil oil brands and operates the Jiffy Lube oil-change chain, long ago abandoned its corporate-wide 3,000-mile-oil-change message.

However, when I checked the Jiffy-Lube website, they now use an offer as a Bonus to receive FREE top-offs on motor oil or any other fluids for life if you change your oil every 3,000 miles!

Another marketing tactic!
It really does depend on the individual driver and how you use your vehicle! You are subjecting your vehicle to "severe driving conditions" if you do any of the following types of driving:

• Multiple short trips
• Stop and go driving
• Cold weather
• Hot weather
• Dusty conditions
• Tow trailers
• Heavy loads

Another thought, from an environmental perspective, is to look at the enormous amount of oil we could save by going from every 3,000 miles to say 5,000! There is no point in wasting precious oil changing it prematurely.

And, we wouldn't have to dispose of so much waste oil, either!

My friend Donna, who lives in Florida, does mostly freeway driving and prefers to change her oil every 3,000 miles.

There are two reasons for this:

First: Because of the extreme heat in Florida.

And Second: Being a single lady she likes to have the peace of mind knowing that her car has been checked out under the hood every 3,000 miles. During the oil change, she has the mechanic check her tires, breaks, hoses, belts, and other fluids.

And, let's face it; most of us have the best of intentions of getting our oil changed when it is due. But, how often do you decide it is time to change the oil and then put it off for another 1,000 miles or so?

The average oil change today is $25.00, or about $100.00 for 4 changes a year, since the average driver puts on 12,000 miles per year. That $100.00 is about what a tow bill is today if you have a break down because you didn't have your car looked over and make sure things are okay.

My suggestion would be to look at your owner's manual, and follow the Manufacturer's guide to best determine your oil-change interval. And, be sure to take into consideration, whether or not your vehicle is subject to severe driving conditions.

Buying a car can be one of the most intimidating experiences in life. But it doesn't have to be! Preparation is the key! Do your research; know what you want, and most importantly what you can afford! You may be tempted to first find the vehicle you want and then figure out how to pay for it later.

Any loan can have an affordable monthly payment if you extend the term long enough, but that can add significantly to the total cost of the car. Focus on the total amount financed rather than on the monthly payment alone! Provide as much cash up front to avoid the car being worth less than the loan.

There is a large part of the car-buying population who won't even consider buying a new car. In fact, used car sales outnumber new car sales three to one!

• Warranty. With a car that is only 1 or 2 years old, the manufacture warranty is transferable to a second owner, usually at no charge.

• Leases are readily available. Most reputable car brokers offer leases similar to the ones offered for a new car.

• Pay cash or take a shorter term loan so you can pay your car off quickly. Pay a little extra each month, this will save you interest!

• No less value. Thanks to engineering strides, vehicles have never been more durable and maintenance-free.

Here is a check list to use after you have chosen the make and model car you both can afford and truly want:

• Researching the asking price.

• How much to finance the vehicle? What interest rate will you pay?

• How much is insurance?

• Check into purchasing a Warranty.

• Obtain a Car History Report.

• Interview the prospective sellers before meeting them.

• Check the undercarriage, engine and body for rust or damage.

• Look for over-spray on the car - some accidents and repairs don't always show on the history report.

• Check the interior - if there is low mileage and the interior is worn, it tells you how the car was treated. If there is high mileage and the interior looks new, the car has probably been maintained.

• Check the overall paint job - if there is one section in pristine condition compared to the others, it's a good indication that part of the vehicle was repaired.

• Look for signs of rust, including under the hood and undercarriage.

• Inspect the tires for wear. Use a penny, "If you see Abe's head, there is not enough tread!"

• Check the oil for the proper level and color.

• Check the coolant and radiator for leaks or corrosion.

• Test the breaks. Listen for any noise like metal grinding to metal.

• Test drive on the highway to gauge acceleration and handling.

• After the test drive, inspect the engine for leaks, odors or smoke.

• Request and review the service records, receipts and title.

• Have a mechanic inspect your vehicle.
